Sukarara Village

Lombok Island is one island that has a wealth of beauty and diverse natural attractions, cultural arts and traditional handicrafts are very impressive. One of them is the traditional craft of weaving or “songket”. Sukarara Village is the name of a lovely little village and is one of the traditional craft of weaving center located in the Village District Sukarara Jonggat Central Lombok West Nusa Tenggara. Location Sukarara village is 25 Kms from the city of Mataram, and 5 kms from the town of Praya or 5 minute journey by car or taxi.

They produce various kinds of merchandise, such as cloth, dress, table cover, blanket, and scarf with high quality and beautiful motifs. Due the high quality product they produce, their village has been widely attract many visitors, local or foreign.

In Sukarara village you may find many women are work as a weaver. It used to be a myth that a man will get infertile if he weave. But the myth is started to be left behind and now many men are work as a weaver. The men usually weave for tenun ikat (string weave) while the women usually weave for tenun songket (weave which usually embroidered with gold /silver threads)

With special characteristics and traditional design depicting the lifestyle of the ancient island of Lombok with motifs of the traditional house and barn and gecko motif, still defend to this day. Although only by using a traditional loom very simple, but the weaving of Sukarara Village has a very good quality and very impressive.

 The price is vary, from IDR 25,000 scarf to IDR 3,000,000 weaved-cloth. If you wish for batik cloth, you can also find in this village. The handmade or the printing batik are available here with Sasambo and Lombok special character with price from IDR 600,000 – 1,000,000. Opens at  8 am – 6 pm.
